wednesday morning
i’ve been in better moods. my friend is gone — he was killed in a house fire on Sunday. his wife and their dog made it out okay. i am relieved for this, but still so messed up.
i don’t know why bad things happen to good people, but that just seems to be the way it goes.
miss you, Frank Morgan. you were a loyal friend and a gentleman, and you and your wife stood by me when I most needed a friend. thank you for that. i won’t say goodbye but I will say, I’ll see you, okay? OK.

“To laugh often and much; To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; To appreciate beauty, to find the best in others; To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.”
-Ralph Waldo Emerson
I am sorry for the loss of your good friend, Nancy. I live a half-dozen blocks from that home. Very sad.

Dan, of course y’all were neighbors. My sister, brother-in-law and a ton of our friends live in the neighborhood. Everyone’s feeling the loss.
He was the custodian at the school where I was librarian. Great guy, great smile, and incredible sense of humor. Thanks for leaving a note, I appreciate it.

Nan, thank you. You would have loved seeing him with the kids — he always had half a dozen “helpers” at lunchtime, it was sweet.
