Book Review: Animal, Vegetable, Miracle; The Ultimate pH Solution; 101 Foods That Could Save Your Life
Little reviews today. This whole “working outside of the home instead of inside in my home office, blogging, spacing out and watching General Hospital on Tivo…” it’s kinda throwing me. I’ll deal, do not fret, Internets.
Do you think you’re going to get recipes again with this post? You are not. I am too tired. I will tell you this: I received a load of books after New Year’s that all had the same theme. That theme was: You Are Fat and Unhealthy and Here Is How We Can Help. I stuffed all of these books onto the bookshelf and walked away.
Later, maybe a week or two after this, I stepped onto the scale. Ha! Ha! Joke is on me. They were right, the jerks.
So I picked up “Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life,” Barbara Kingsolver’s latest (co-written with daughters Camille and Lily, and husband Steven L. Hopp). You will find all the recipes here. So go clicky-click, would you? It’s a great book. I especially appreciated how all-encompassing it is, how she addresses what all of us need to do as inhabitants of this planet in order to make sure that everyone is eating. (And not overeating. And not eating out of season. And not eating a bunch of toxic crap.)
After her words of encouragement, I felt brave enough to pick up “101 Foods That Could Save Your Life,” by David Grotto, RD, LDN. (“Discover: Nuts that can help keep you thin… fats that reduce blood pressure and boost brain health; and much more,” etc.) Yeah, that’s what I thought, too. I’m all, sure thing. I’ll go eat a handful of pistachios right now. However — the recipes are great (go buy a copy if you want to check them out. I don’t think they have them linked from a website). I appreciated the tips for selection, storing and using various foods, and I liked the “lifesaver” tips. To wit: “Heart Health: A study using mice fed freeze-dried grape powder found that LDL cholesterol was protected from being converted into the more dangerous type that can lead to heart disease.” Who knew?
(A disclaimer: I am no medical expert. Please take all this with a grain of salt. And some grape powder.)
Next: “The Ultimate pH Solution: Balance Your Body Chemistry to Prevent Disease and Lose Weight,” by Michelle Schoffro Cook, DNM, DAc. The print?: Too small. The recipes?: Look good. So many promises?: I think would be hard to keep.
