Tinker Bell (say quick that you believe)
I love Tinker Bell, know why? No, why? (Sorry, couldn’t resist.) The new movie is coming out, and I am even more excited about it than my children are. And they are quite excited, having just seen the original Peter Pan not long ago.
I love that little fairy-girl.
How big of a Tinker Bell fan am I? So big that when I was in third grade, I informed my mom that she needed to sew me a costume “Just like Tinker Bell, green, and with the wings and everything” for “something at school.”
That “something at school” was happening the next day.
No problem. My Mom, with all of her patience and mad sewing skills, whipped up a cute little costume. Next day she and her best friend Judy showed up for the “something at school,” heard music start, and out I danced on the stage. Completely solo. (I brought a record from home for my accompaniment. I had practiced in my room in secret for a few weeks. The ballet lessons paid off nicely.)
I loved Tinker Bell so much that I got up in front of my entire K-8 school to do a dance in her honor. An homage to the sweet little fairy. All of my 8-year-old buddies ran down front and sat in front of the stage, yelling and cheering for me. Then everyone clapped. I curtsied. I smiled. I curtsied some more. I was Tinker Bell. It was an excellent, excellent moment. I remember it well.
My mom’s version of the conversation she and her girlfriend had, following my dance:
Judy: “Did you know she was going to do that?”
Mom: “I had no idea.”
Also, in E.T. when it gets to the scene where the mom is reading from “Peter Pan” to Gertie… you know that scene? I always bawl my head off when it gets to that scene.
Mary: She says she thinks she could get well again, if children believed in fairies. Do you believe in fairies? Say quick that you believe.
Gertie: I do, I do, I do.
Mary: If you believe, clap your hands. (They clap their hands.)
I believe.
love,
WM
ps — This post is Disney-approved. This is a compensated post from Disney and BlogHer, in honor of the release of the new Tinker Bell movie that will be released on DVD and Blu-ray on October 28th. Yes, I do it all for the love of Tinker Bell.
I am all for you getting some compensation! Yaay. And your mom ROCKED! If one of my kids pulled that, I would say, “Sorry honey Mommy needs a LITTLE MORE NOTICE!” and then I would roll my eyes and stomp off. They would do their little dance in their jeans. I would probably have missed it. My poor kids.
I wish you had a video of yourself as Tink.

Compensated or not, I agree with you that Tinker Bell looks great for kids and adults alike. There is something appealing about pixie dust and the fantasy of fairies.
