Diary from Louisiana 6

September 2nd, 2005

From C, Fri. Sept. 2, mid-morning:

Bush is supposed to be down here sometime. I’m sure just to detract security and rescue forces from what they should be doing so they can protect his lame ass. Believe me if they are shooting and killing rescuers just think of what they would like to do to him. My brother-in-law met another rescuer last nite that had saved a guy, a Dr no less, after he had been bike-jacked and robbed when he tried to evacuate (I think before the storm).

It’s horrible here. And my friend R just told me Harry Connick Jr rolled into town (N.O.) on the I-10 that they told us was unpassable and was bitching out the mayor for claiming they couldn’t get in there. I think they finally started getting water and stuff to them but like i said, too little to damn late.

Thanks,

C

My little half brother is still missing, along with his wife (he is 28, not so little, but still my kid brother, ya know) and his mother. I pray that he got the heck out of NOLA before it turned into Hell. We are terribly worried about him. Hugs and prayers to C and R and all the others we have utterly failed in all this.

I got the idea from Kym’s blog (www.exmundane.com) to make hygeine boxes as a PTA activity. We’d buy the supplies or get them donated and have the kids assemble them and put in art work, or decorate the shoe box. We could enclose their letters and give them a chance to express their feelings about all this scary stuff. I know you are a PTA goddess also, so I thought I’d mention it.

Yes! He emailed my sister. They got out before the storm, thank God and his smart southern mama who insisted and guilted. (I swear, where would men be without their wives and mothers???) He’s got no house, and just the clothes he came with, but he’s got his wife and his mom and family, and feels lucky to have that. Luckily, we have dozens of cousins sprinkled liberally around the South (my birth father was one of 17 kids. My grandparents were devout Catholics. Apparently horny ones, also.) and he is staying with some shirttale relatives and vollunteering for Catholic Aid society. Thank you for the good thoughts!
