Friday Advice Column for Wacky Mothers & Others

March 10th, 2006

Dear Wacky Mommy,

I suspect that I may have neurological damage. I want to get an MRI just to see what condition my condition is in — if you catch my drift and I’m sure you do. What do I say to my doctor? I feel weird and foolish. Should I just leave it alone? Really, what’s knowing for sure going to do for me anyway?

So, whadya got Wacky Mommy?

Suspecting in Stumptown

Dear Suspecting,

If you need some reassurance, a referral, or recommendation call your primary care doctor right now and make an appointment. Or just request the recommendation — nurses are helpful with this sort of thing. If you don’t need a referral, go ahead and make an appointment with a specialist, if you have someone in mind. Do it now.

You’re smart. Don’t forget that. And remember, the doctors work for you, not the other way around. So make a list of questions, concerns, all of that, beforehand. Take a notebook with you to write things down. (As soon as my doctors start talking, my hearing stops working.)

Taking care of yourself, and listening to your instincts, is a smart thing.

“Considering how dangerous everything is, nothing is really very frightening” — Gertrude Stein
