March 18th, 2006

We’ve been receiving oodles of goodies here at Wacky House and are ready to review ’em all. Yes, Swiffer, Dan Zanes, DOG TRAIN! and (wait! There’s more!) Jack the Cuddly Dog.

What do they all have in common? They make us happy.

Hair, Vertigo Style, and Dessert, a la Roux

March 4th, 2006

When your hair looks this good, why waste it on a hockey game? That’s right. The Portland Winter Hawks have gone from being in almost last place to almost first place. See what a few weeks and Brandon Dubinsky will get you? Doo-by! Doo-by!

However. I do not know much about hockey. I do not even know if they won. (The score was 2-1, Winter Hawks, when we left mid-second period.) You will have to ask Hockey God about that.

“It’s boring!” says Wacky Girl.

“I am planning on never skating again,” says Wacky Boy.

So we left my husband at the game, sullen and grumpy because his family does not share his love of hockey, and went to Roux instead.

Best kids’ books

September 11th, 2005

Great series by Chris Raschka, “Thingy Things,” includes our Wacky Favorite, “Doggy Dog,” along with “Goosey Goose,” “Moosey Moose” and “Sluggy Slug.” Get the whole series — they’re too cool. Fanciful illustrations, funny words. Wacky Boy is ga-ga for them.

“You! What PLANET is this!”
— McCoy, “The City on the Edge of Forever”, stardate 3134.0

Last night my Wacky Friend A and I went to the zoo to see Ozotmatli (sp?), crazy Red Hot Chili Peppers sounding band from L.A. — kinda Tower of Power, with the horns and all, and Los Lonely Boys, to whom i pledge my undying adoration.

V. good show, nice warm night, under the moon and the stars. Huge crowd. Best show i’ve ever seen at the zoo, and A agrees.

What we’re reading at Wacky House:

Kids:
1) The “Fudge” books by Judy Blume (too funny) and the Babysitters’ Club series.
2) Anything with dinos.
3) Anything with helicopters, planes, monorails and other “Things that Go.”

Grown-ups:
1) Ethan Canin — “Carry Me Across the Water” — This made me cry it was so good. All about a grandpa’s memories of World War II and how it changed his life.

3) Anything by Philip Roth, especially his new one, “The Plot Against America.”
4) Mona Simpson, Mona Simpson

6) The New Yorker and The Nation

ttfn, and have a great weekend!!!
