new favorite snack, Under the Tuscan Gun, plus Drama & Andy

July 13th, 2009

Pretzels dipped in Nutella. Nom, nom. (PS — Food? Go check out Under the Tuscan Gun. Gabriele and Debi are just too frickin’ sweet for words, and I love their recipes and their style of cooking.)

Lawn is mowed, weeds are (mostly) weeded, Steve tied up all the beans, tomatoes, honeysuckle and whatever else was running wild in the garden yesterday… We are… happy over here. Plants are happy, kids are happy, I am happy because I just started Season 5 of “Weeds” and Season 6 of “Entourage” and yes, I’m going to study later. Don’t worry, I will complete this class, even if I have to spend my entire summer doing it.

Andy on “Weeds” and Drama on “Entourage” just get better every season, I’m telling you.

Rest in Peace, Bea Arthur

April 25th, 2009

“As Dorothy Zbornak, Arthur seemed as caustic and domineering as Maude. She was unconcerned about the similarity of the two roles. ‘Look — I’m 5-feet-9, I have a deep voice and I have a way with a line,’ she told an interviewer. ‘What can I do about it? I can’t stay home waiting for something different. I think it’s a total waste of energy worrying about typecasting.'”

of course

March 20th, 2009

Just talked with the staff at my kids’ school — apparently the cold turns into the flu, then the flu turns into a cough. “And the cough lasts. And lasts.”

So, we’re starting spring break early, and not in the manner planned.

Nevertheless, I will persevere.

Now watching Mr. President — I tivo’ed it last night. Kevin Eubank wore a suit in honor of the visit. Heh heh heh. Who do I have a bigger crush on? Kevin? The President? Josh Turner? It’s a toss-up.

Leno: “Your mom will be so proud.”
Kevin: “Oh, yes, she will be, Jay.”

Heh heh heh.

The President: “Let me just say, I think Kevin looks good in a suit. He looks a little like Secret Service.”

Best quote from President Obama: “They say if you want a friend in Washington, get a dog.”

“Dwight and I were just having a very unfortunate situation”

March 12th, 2009

Michael: “Why do you have a diary?”
Dwight: “I keep secrets from my computer.”

— “The Office”

I’ve kept a diary since I was nine years old. That’s right, Internets. I don’t tell you everything. But since I’ve started my blog, the diary hasn’t been put to as much use as it could be. Why write it down when I can type it up? But. But, but, but… lately I’ve been scribbling for pages on end. It is very fun, therapeutic and sprawling and a little weird, because when I’ve finished a volume I just toss it into the closet and what’s the point? There is no point, that’s the point.

“If you meet the Buddha on the road, kill him.” (You ever heard that one before?)

There are some things I don’t want to blog. Alternately, there are some things I don’t want to commit to a diary.

There is a lot to say, much of it boring, but I don’t care. Some of it is worth keeping. You can skip the entry; my kids can toss the diaries into the recycling bin after I’m gone. Whatever. I like having some different spots to stash it all.

Grandma update: She is almost 89 and feels like hell. Questions? I love her. Her cookbook… still a work in progress, but we’ve almost figured out all the details.

If you have a recipe, e-mail it to me and I’ll include it.

Hockey God and Wacky Girl: at a hockey game.

Wacky Boy: keeping busy with scotch tape. Refusing to change into pajamas, refusing to put away laundry, refusing to pick out clothes for tomorrow. Typical.

Wacky Mommy: Tell it like it are… would you? Ha ha ha ha HA! Well. It’s spring here and I’m glad about that. The crocus, daffodils, daphne, all are blooming and beautiful. We’re seeing a lot of people, in raincoats, strolling by with their dogs, who are also in raincoats. That’s kinda funny.

I’ve been studying some and reading fiction a whole lot and drinking not enough tea and way too much coffee. If I could limit myself to just three cups of coffee a day I would be happy but damn. I like my java. Trying not to watch too much TV, but I think this is the best season ever for “Friday Night Lights” and it is irresistible to me. Also loving “Brothers & Sisters” jesus god please help us, because if you had ever told me I would like a show starring Calista Flockhart I would have said HAR HAR HAR to you.

Also, Wacky Boy and I went to see “Beverly Hills Chihuahua” today and it turned out to be a kinda subversive little movie. That was unexpected. I liked that.

All for now.

Saturday Book & DVD Review: “Grace After Midnight,” by Felicia “Snoop” Pearson, and “The Wire”

October 18th, 2008

Finally, a memoir where someone doesn’t lie their head off. “Grace After Midnight” is the story of Felicia “Snoop” Pearson (who played Snoop on the acclaimed HBO series “The Wire”). (Grand Central Publishing, 2007, $22, 233 pages.) She is one amazing Baltimore woman. As a teenager, she landed in Jessup State Penitentiary for killing a woman in self-defense.

Whether Pearson is writing about her birth (as a three-pound, cross-eyed baby who was addicted to crack), about her mother tearing the dress off of her baby girl’s body and selling it for drugs, or about her knack for selling dildos and perfume in prison, she writes it raw, pure, and poignantly. She’s got a sense of humor, too, thank God for her. (more…)

General Hospital

July 4th, 2008

feuilleton (fuhy-tohn) noun, masculine
: serial (program), soap opera

I’ve been trying to cut back on watching General Hospital. It’s not going that well. I love GH, as you may know, but I do not have an affinity for any of the characters right now. NONE OF THEM. Except Original Carly, who is now “Claudia.”

Sonny and Carly #4? Always yelling at each other.
Jason? Not enough sex scenes.
Sam? Never liked Sam.
Emily? Dead. Maxie? Dead. Georgie? Spinelli? Robin? Dr. Drake Jr.? The “hott” nurses? All stupid. (Do I have Maxie/Georgie reversed again, BF? I never really have gotten to attached to them. Sorry.)

Anyway. I want to get a life and this means less TV. I do have a pretty big addiction going for The Wire right now, so any free time is devoted to that. (I just finished viewing the third season, so NO SPOILERS please.) And am re-watching the entire series run of Curb Your Enthusiasm. Also, Friday Night Lights. (I’m re-watching Season 2 cuz I missed half the episodes.)

Are you a TV fan? It lures me in, every time.

Happy Fourth, those of you in the States.

“Today on General Hospital…”

May 21st, 2008

Watching General Hospital with my husband is a little bit… challenging, let’s say. You may already know this.

HG: Who’s zat?

me: Zacchara. Anthony Zacchara.

HG: Mobster? Mobster! New mobster. Like Moreno. Or Alcazar. Zacchara/Alcazar, Alcazar/Zacchara — it’s a anagram, see? Alcazara. Alcacazara. See? Who’s zat?

me: How can you even remember Moreno? Was there a Moreno? I don’t remember. That’s old Carly. Carly 1.

HG: Carly 1? I don’t know this Carly 1.

me: YES, you do. She’s the original Carly, the best Carly, the only Carly. Now she’s… someone Zacchara. But I just call her Original Carly Zacchara.

HG: I liked Carly 2. She was hot and sexy. Also, Carly 3, cuz she’s sassy. But not Carly 1. No. They should have all three of the Carlys back, that’d be good. A Carly-palooza. Where’s Lizzie? It’s back on!

HG (dives under a leopard-print comforter on the couch): Hmmm. Listening to Sonny and Jason — both their voices sound the same. You. Cannot. Tell. Them. Apart. (Emerges from under comforter.) Where’s Lizzie? I like Lizzie. What’s that thing on Sonny’s head?

me: That’s not Sonny — that’s Nicholas Cassadine. How could you think that was Sonny? He had a brain tumor — that’s a bandage. Now he can’t see Elizabeth anymore. She’s dead! Did you know that?

HG (flipping out): LIZZIE IS DEAD? They killed Lizzie? You didn’t tell me that!

me: I meant Emily. Emily is dead.

HG: Geez, that scared me. Eh, I didn’t like Emily that much.

me: I did. Anyway, Emily’s dead, Nicholas had brain surgery and now he can’t see visions of her anymore. So. Carly Zacchara. (Who has somehow ended up in a compromising position with Nicholas Cassadine… at the castle… in a storm… We study Carly 1 Old Carly Original Carly Claudia Zacchara for awhile.)

HG: She’s responsible for Michael gettting a bullet in his head! (Michael, who has apparently been kicked off the show. Jerks. Evil casting jerks. I love that kid. wm) Evil bitch. Evil. (Commercial comes on.) That’s what we need — a little Glad fan. Gets everything all syrupy-sweet.

(Sorry, Internets. He’s getting a little loopy. Better get the big guy to bed. xxox wm)
